Ok, so I was diagnosed with Type 1 after having a short but high dose of prednisone (a corticosteroid). My dosage wasn't tapered off. I ended up in hospital, and was put on insulin to bring my BG levels down. Since leaving the hospital I have had virtually daily lows. The doctor has been cutting my insulin dose to try to stop these. Eventually he told me to go off the insulin.
After googling around I am left with these burning questions:
1) Do I really have diabetes? Could it have been temporary diabetes?
2) Or do I have Type 2 and not Type 1 as originally diagnosed?
3) Could my shortness of breath, fatigue etc when I was diagnosed have been due to adrenal crisis?
3) I've read that some Type 1 diabetics can do without insulin during the honeymoon period. Is that perhaps what is going on with me now?
I wish I knew the answers to them now, but it looks like it's going to be a waiting game for now. Doc gets back in three weeks time. I think I'm either going to see an endocrinologist in the mean time (although I'm not sure that would help without the info the doc has) or make an appointment with the doc so I'll be ready and waiting by the time he returns.
