I love receiving parcels. Even if I know what is i the parcel before it arrives, I still get a thrill in signing for it and opening it. Who knows? Perhaps I'm wrong and some kind benefactor mysteriously decided to send me a new book?
Yesterday my "Type 1 Diabetes for Dummies" book arrived. I ordered it online from Kalahari.net, and they said it would take 10 working days to arrive, and lo and behold it took 9! I flicked through it during lunch and after work, and it helped to clarify some things that I had already suspected. An example of this is the gnawing worry I had about using regular cough medicine and throat lozenges. I have found the answer, and indeed I should check the sugar and alcohol content before I use them. There's also a chapter on pregnancy, and that helps too, as I rather think I'd like to be a mommy. The book is written mainly for the parents of Type 1 kids though.
And, better yet, my medic alert bracelet, necklace and wallet cards arrived this morning. I'm very impressed with the bracelet. It's unobtrusive, and doesn't have the medic alert symbol in red. Sublety is a good thing, in my books, although my mom would prefer to buy me "I am a diabetic" t-shirts to wear!!!
On a slightly more important note, I've decided to go back on to the insulin. My fasting blood sugar was 6.1 (109.8) this morning, and the previous day's readings were all creeping up into the high 5's (90-102+). I know my mom would prefer me to stay off the insulin longer, but I read that having low doses of insulin can prolong the honeymoon period. I've also found that my energy levels have dipped significantly, and this has affected my mood as well. I remember thinking often last year that I'd be so much happier, if I just had enough energy to get through the day and keep up with other people. I wonder if that period was a precursor of the diabetes? When my doctor told me to go off the insulin, he said I should do it "for a couple of days and see what happens", and it's been about a week now so I think my meter will have enough data for him to see what happened....
