Next term, the Rhodes University Counselling Centre will be starting a diabetic support group. The group will run on Wednesdays, from 16:00 to 17:00, at the Counselling Centre. Although initially run by Rhodes, the group will be open to everyone. If you would like to be part of it, contact Delvene at the Counselling Centre with your details. I'm very excited to be a part of this.
I've been brainstorming some ideas for activities/discussions, and here are some of them:
- putting together a care and information pack for new diabetic students moving to Grahamstown (dealing with Rhodes admin, drinking safely, where to find diabetic products etc)
- lobbying local restaurants to serve more diabetic-friendly food, or to be flexible with meals for diabetics
- reading the stories of people who have had diabetes for a long time (I found the story of a woman who had lived with it for 50 years) or through more challenging times (like Kelsey's pregnancy story)
- asking a dietician to speak to us
- sharing recipes
- arranging transport in order to travel to meetings of the Port Elizabeth diabetes association group
If you have any more ideas, please let me know.
