According to Douglas Adams, the cover of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is emblazoned with the words DON'T PANIC!! I think it's a motto most of us could live by, and it's certainly one I should have reminded myself of this week.
My blood sugar was running high. Initially I assumed that perhaps I was eating too much, so I watched my eating and watched my BG. Despite eating very well, my BG did not change - in fact it got a bit higher! When my fasting BG hit 6.7 I decided that it was time to break out the insulin. Two units with breakfast, and four hours later I was dealing with a hypo. My BG behaved itself while the insulin was active, but after supper it rose to 7.1. I decided to give it a bit of time and see if it would come down on its own. At 1am, I tested again, and instead of dropping it had hit 7.4!! I panicked. I needed sleep because I had a long day ahead, but I didn't want to go to sleep with my BG high and climbing. I was convinced my honeymoon period was ending and I was going to have to deal with the daily schedule that comes with insulin injections. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep.
I woke up again at 5am. My stomach was in knots. And then I realised that I had my period, and my BG was back to normal. Indeed, I think DON'T PANIC!! should be the motto of all diabetics. It's definitely one I could make use of on a regular basis.
