DON'T PANIC!!

According to Douglas Adams, the cover of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is emblazoned with the words DON'T PANIC!! I think it's a motto most of us could live by, and it's certainly one I should have reminded myself of this week.

My blood sugar was running high. Initially I assumed that perhaps I was eating too much, so I watched my eating and watched my BG. Despite eating very well, my BG did not change - in fact...

Grahamstown Support Group

Next term, the Rhodes University Counselling Centre will be starting a diabetic support group. The group will run on Wednesdays, from 16:00 to 17:00, at the Counselling Centre. Although initially run by Rhodes, the group will be open to everyone. If you would like to be part of it, contact Delvene at the Counselling Centre with your details. I'm very excited to be a part of this.

I've been brainstorming some...

I don't feel good. I don't know why.

Yesterday I woke up and I felt bad. Not unbearably bad, but not quite right. I felt a bit dizzy, and a bit disconnected with the world around me. My fasting BG was a little on the high side (6.3 or 113.4), but not high enough for me to be able to tie it to the way I was feeling. I thought I would feel better as the day progressed, but things didn't really improve, and I started having passing stomach cramps...

Meeting My First (Non-self) Diabetic

Yesterday I met the only other person I know who has diabetes. We are in quite different situations, but it was still good to talk to him and not feel as alone. He's had Type 2 for five years. He told me he didn't really know much about diabetes, and that he hadn't gone in to learning about it much at all. Pretty much the polar opposite of me!

I had these strange feelings listening to him talk. I really wanted to...

Making a bad day even worse

Yesterday I got the news that I wasn't shortlisted for the Clinical Masters course at the University of South Africa. What a blow! I knew that my chances of getting in were slim (10 out of 500 students get in!), but I'm devastated nonetheless.

My pre-diagnosis mathod for dealing with this kind of situation would be to eat a ton of chocolate and watch a sad movie. In trying to adjust this method, I ate two bars of...

Following the Big Meltdown

Since a number of people have commented on my "Big Meltdown" post, I thought I should update you guys about what has been happening since then.

Firstly, I went to the graduate funding guy at my university to discuss the possibility of getting bursaries or scholarships. He was quite positive about my chances, and I filled in all the paperwork and have submitted my request. Now I just have to wait and see what...

Hikus Interruptus and the Helpful Pavlova

On Sunday it was a beautiful and sunny 28 degrees (or 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit). I decided that I was going to take advantage of the weather and go for a walk/hike (I'm not really sure when a walk becomes a hike - does it have to do with how long it is??). I've been really slack about exercising lately, mainly because it's just been too bloody cold, and I've been far too busy attending the Critical Methods conference and the National Arts...

My Best Breakfasts

Breakfast is the worst meal of the day to me. I love sleeping, and being cuddly and warm in the morning makes it very difficult for me to get up in the morning. This inevitably leads to me running late, and breakfast being rushed (I used to skip it all the time, before I was diagnosed). Finding a quick and easy breakfast that suits my lifestyle has been one of the problems that I've been trying to solve recently. These...

News from the Doc

saw the doctor yesterday after a couple of months, and finally got some answers to some questions I have been worried about.

Firstly, he considers me a Type 1 diabetic. He said that the case could be made for me being a insulin-requiring Type 2, but that because I'm relatively young he chalked me up as Type 1. It's so good to have that cleared up.

Following on from this, he thinks I am in the honeymoon...

South African Diabetes Resources Part II

Some more of my favourite South African diabetic things:

GIFSA
GIFSA is the GI Foundation of South Africa. They are the people responsible for testing the GI of South African products, and they have a series of logos that the company responsible can then put on their product. GIFSA produces a publication that lists the GI, fat, kilojoule, carb and protein contents of most products available at your local Pick 'n Pay. ...
