About Me

Mary Kate Cary is the parent of a child with type 1 diabetes, who was diagnosed in February 2001 at age 5. Since then, Mrs. Cary has become involved with the Capitol Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). She serves as a mentor to newly diagnosed families through the JDRF Mentor Family program. Her husband Rob serves on the board of directors of the JDRF Capitol Chapter.

Mrs. Cary also serves as a member of the parent advisory panel to the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. She is an active fundraiser for the diabetes center there and is a past executive committee member of the Child Health Center Board at Children’s as well.
Along with her husband, Mrs. Cary chaired the 2004 JDRF Night of Hope Gala, raising a record $1.2 million for research for a cure. Currently, she was the co-chair of the 2005 gala which was held in November 2005.

Mrs. Cary is a past chair of the Scholarship Auction at Beauvoir School, and currently serves on the executive board of the Parents Association at the National Cathedral School. She is a class trustee at the University of Virginia.

A former White House speechwriter for former President George H.W. Bush from 1988 to 1992, Mrs. Cary continues to write speeches for a variety of political and corporate leaders. She has previously held positions at the Justice Department, on Capitol Hill and at ABC News. A graduate of the University of Virginia, she holds a B.A. in International Relations. Mrs. Cary lives in Chevy Chase, Md. with her husband and two daughters.
