Metformin was also used in Europe for some time before US approval by the FDA, which adds to the safety factor.

It's also cheap. I can get 3 months' worth for $7 on my drug plan, which is about 4 cents a pill. Even if you don't have a drug plan, you can get a months' worth at WalMart for $4.

For those on a tight budget, this should be an important factor.

Dear Gretchen,

Good point about metformin being used in Europe for years before we got it in the U.S. I forgot to mention that. But I did mention that it is inexpensive.

David, could you explain for me, the advantage of the taking Avandamet?  My doctor had started me on just Avandia when I was first diagnosed Type 2, about 4 years ago, then after my rapid weight gain, he changed me to Avandamet, which I have been on since, and have not gained any more weight, and have even lost a little.

But, what is the advantage of taking BOTH (i.e.., Avandamet), rather than just taking Metformin?

You know the disadvantages of taking Avandia, which includes Avandamet (especially weight gain and possible heart problems). But there are advantages too, especially in terms of the primary thing these pills are supposed to do, which is to control our blood glucose. In a 32-week clinical trial (which was the FDA's basis for approving Avandamet) 152 people who took it had an average A1C reduction of 2.3%, which is huge. At the same time 150 people who took metformin alone had an A1C reduction of 1.8%, which is very good, but not as good as using both. See: http://us.gsk.com/products/assets/us_avandamet.pdf
