I take 4 capsules of fish oil (4,000 mg) per day and while it has lowered my triglicerides tremendously, currently 70, it has not done as well for my fasting blood sugar. I only have high BG levels in the morning- in the 120's most of the time. I am trying to figure out if this is due to my dark chocolate indulgence when I hike on long hikes or long bike rides. I thought I needed more carbohydrates during intense exercise; am I wrong?

Mr. Mendosa,
I wanted to let you know how very useful I find your articles here. I often share them with my online support group for lupus since many of us also have diabetes. I'm sure that's no surprise to you. You've explained things with up-to-date research yet in laymen's terms so the rest of us can understand them. I wanted to send along a note of thanks.

I was so glad to read this about the fish effects on insulin. My daughter is now 40 yrs old and has diabetes 1 since she was nine. Her dad also had it, so she was well informed on the condition and very disiplined from the very beginning, so she watched everything and complied to the letter her diet, and to this day has no
damage to anything and has lead a healthy life, given birth to 3 healthy children, with 3 C-sections, and gone back to work as a hair dresser in 6 wks. I say all this because I want people to understand that she knows how all this works, but this is my point; everytime she ate fish, regardless of any makeup foods with the meal to prevent lows, (because we already knew she had severe lows when eating fish) but she likes fish, so when she would eat it she would add steak, and plenty of carbs to make sure she didn't have the severe lows, well nothing mattered, regardless of the makeup foods she still had them, and we always wondered why this would happen even though she ate all the other foods with it. And it was consistent to the point of not being able to even eat fish.
So BINGO amazing. Thanks so much for that, this could really be important concerning diabetes.
2 points re: improving insulin sensitivy:
1) there are vegan sources of EPA and DHA, which allow one to optimize one's 6:3 ratio by taking a supplement derived from algae grown in tanks on land.
2) Here's more recent research re: an unusual but very important dietary route to improved insulin sensitivity:
