i was actually at the congressional hearings for this- here is an excerpt between a congressman and an AMA representative:
CM: What is your answer to American people and patients who want free access to labs?
AMA: You want answers?
CM: I think the Americans are entitled.
AMA: You want answers? (SHOUTING)
CM: Americans want the truth! (SHOUTING)
AMA: You can't handle the truth! (SHOUTING)
[pauses]...AMA: Son, we live in a world that has labs, and those labs have to be guarded by men with PhDs. Who's gonna do it? You? You, David? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for over-medication, and you curse the insurance companies. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That over-medication, while tragic, probably saves lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that committee, you need me on that committee. We use words like prescription, reimbursement, invasive testing. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a profitline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of laboratory interpretation that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said congratulations and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up an iPAD, and suffer pharmaceutical advertisements. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!
Yes, this service is amazing and has made my medical experience so much more a shared one between the Dr and me. Palo Alto Medical Foundation has begun a fully interactive service of sharing results as soon as they are available in all areas. All medical tests and I mean all, including MRI, blood and screening test, whatever you can test they will show. It also encourages interaction between Dr and patient with immediate access to Dr email account. It is also lists all medications you are taking, all appointments you have, all tests, all Dr recommendations. It is interactive medicine at its best. Thank you for telling us more that is happening in this field.
