Dr. Bernstein's Big Book

By David Mendosa, Health Guide Thursday, January 12, 2012
If you follow a very-low carb diet to manage your diabetes, you have no better starting point than the big book by Dr. Richard K. Bernstein. Even if you have been on a very low-carb diet for years, as I have, this book is a basic guide to refer to again and again.Until a few days ago I had only four ...

I would like to add that youu should be careful with your orders.

That is the reason why Amazon are famous and have a good reputation

You order and get all the information without asking and begging.

Still do not have all the information I asked for

I totally agree with David. Dr. Berstein is my greatest diabetes hero too. I jsut ordered the 4th edition of his book even though I too have the other 3! Plus he has a new ebook out and a 5 CD set of everything diabetes. I am not a rep for him..  After being dxed with type 1 15 years ago, it was not untill I came across Diabetes Solution that I discovered how valuable the low carb approach is to balancing my blood sugars as well as managing my weight. PLUS the infomation presented in his book is invaluable.

For anyone with diabetes, even if his diet seems too restictive, his book is filled with information to make your life BETTER!

In fact, I have been so inspired by his way of eating for diabetes control... that I changed my career and now teach others how to eat this way as a health and nutrition coach. www.RoseHealthCoaching.com

I also helped found a cooking support group to actually put these low carb foods in people's hands and empower them to learn how to cook this way... With happiness and lots of flavor... Without denial or deprivation. It's called www.TheSuppersPrograms.org , a non profit based in Princeton, NJ with meetings for lunches and dinners across Central NJ. I started meetings for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and per diabetes as well as any blood sugar related condition... Like obesity and depression. There are our favorite recipes on the website plus hundreds of healing stories from members.... Mine is under Founders- Karen. It is an all volunteer support group so the only cost is that of the groceries for your meal... Typically $8-$10. I actually met a woman yesterday, in person, who found me from my post here! So exciting to be part of this empowered community... Even though our docs and endos don't get the low carb thing. Contact me at www.RoseHealthCoaching.com.

looks very interesting

i am going to "study" the whole site

Great... there are many recipes and lots of stories from real people who have learned to eat the whole food way and what worked for them.

It's a journey!

Have compassion for yourself along the way.

Find support and like minded people... we do not live in a world conducive to lowering our blood sugars!

My best, Karen

Mr. Mendosa. I'm facing TKR in Feb & I can't get a straight answer from Kaiser about their protocols for someone on no meds yet (I've done Bernstein for about 4 years & my numbers are good----5.2 A1c & good lipid profile). Meds may be in my future, of course, but, well, I'd like to put it off!

My surgeon says over 140 during surgery & he starts an insulin drip. Maybe that's okay. I don't know. But once I'm out of surgery---can my husband & I take charge somehow?. My surgeon thinks I "have a little bit of diabetes, don't worry, don't ask questions." I am not reassured.

Any recommendations on how to maintain control under such stress is welcome!.....Judith in Portland

Dear Judith,

Actually, Dr. Bernstein addresses the terrible problems of hospitalization in his book. I reviewed his recommendations, ones that he made in an earlier version of the book, at http://www.healthcentral.com/diabetes/c/17/109566/hospitals-control

My dear..can't process the link, but have the book. Didn't need surgery when I first found him. I'm going to review NOW.....Thanks......

I just ordered this book on my Kindle. I have pre diabetes and am hopeful with the low carb ways of eating that I can get this under control before it turns into regular diabetes. Thank you for your informative website, Mr Mendoza. It really helps me!

David, are you telling me Dr. Bernstein is responsible for the basal/bolus concept?  Not arguing.  Just want to know if I should be praising him for something else.

I will, however, tell you - I figured out before he did that 3 small doses of Levemir a day work better than 2 larger ones!  I was pretty proud of myself for that one.  People think I'm nuts, but it is the "cat's meow" relative to flat basal amounts.

Dear Doris,

Yes. Dr. Bernstein pioneered what because the basal/bolus concept. And lots more!

Just purchased this book for my IPhone for $14.99.  Downloads fast and is easy to read.

More important, David Mendosa and Dr. Bernstein are increasing life quality for thousands and saving thousands of lives with their advice.  I am a university professor trained in food science, and as soon as I was diagnosed, I severely restricted carbs instinctively.  My wife thought I was nuts, but I returned to high school weight in three months, my A1C's normalized, my tryglcerides plummeted, and other measures such as cholesterol went to normal range.  Only after this I learned about the insane advice of ADA.  I took the required diabetes course and told my endo that the food advice they give is killing diabetics.

David, thank you for the support of Dr. Bernstein. I enjoyed your summary of his life work and will pass it on to diabetics who dont know of Dr. B. He saved my life too.

Dr. Bernstein is a national treasure.

I bet it bugged him to no end that he favored rosiglitazone over pioglitazone in the penultimate edition of his book.  Rosiglitazone subsequently has fallen way out of favor due to apparent heart toxicity.
