Like most people with diabetes, I have osteoarthritis. I know that I suffered from it two or three years ago. I can't say that it's cured now, but at least I don't have any arthritis pain any more. When I saw a doctor in October 2005 about the pain in my left knee that kept me from hiking, he sent...

I enjoyed your article very much - it was like reading some about myself.  The difference is I am a woman who weighed 370 instead of 312, and since I have been on Byetta the past year, I have lost 45 pounds and yesterday was my first day at the Y starting a supervised exercise program!  All the other things you tried, (including the Omega supplement) I have tried.  I even tried getting shots in my kneecaps from an orthopedic surgeon that was supposed to help, but only made them worse.

I am feeling optimistic about my new program and feeling better with the weight loss, even though I have a long way to go.

Do you have any other remedies for pain you could suggest?  I take Tylenol very sparingly because of the liver thing.

Good luck with your mountain climbing and thanks for the nice article.

    Dear Robbie,

Great that my article resonated with you so much and that you are also doing so well. Keep on with Byetta and if you can, graduatlly switch to a lower and lower carb diet. Your hunger will diminish as will, of course, your weight. And your A1C will also go down.

For the arthritis, the supplement that you may want to seek out is one that I mentioned in my article but you didn't explicitly mention in your comment -- ASU. I do think that the scientific literature shows that it may well work.

And keep on taking the omega-3 oil -- or resume it, if you have stopped. There are many excellent reasons for taking it in addition to arthritis. Please see my article here on krill oil at:

Hi David ~ Thanks for answering me so quickly.  I am currently taking fish oil for Omega 3, but I will check around to find the Krill oil you mentioned and also the ASU.  I am working hard on the lower carb diet and using fruit as my "sweet tooth" items.  I have given up caffeine & refined sugars and am feeling better all the time.  It's about time I took care of me - wish I had started years ago.

    Thanks again,

I wonder what the difference is between Saponis which are in Yucca (which I use for Arthritis) and unsaponifiables which you mention above. The root word seems the same.

I know that the pain has just gone away with one or two pills a day.  It comes back when I run out.  I know thay race horses are fed a scoop of Yucca a day to extend their racing life.  Since I value myself as much as a race horse I have been taking Yucca for many years. The result is that I have no swelling in my joints and compared to my brother and sister I am vary active.  I also walk a few miles daily before I go to work.

After reading a previous article David wrote about krill oil, I started taking 1,000mg daily for about three months.  I use the NSI brand from Vita-Cost (very reasonably priced):  http://www.vitacost.com/NSI-KriaXanthin-Antarctic-Krill-Oil-with-Natural-Astaxanthin-1000-mg-300-Softgels   Two years ago I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis of my right knee.  The orthopedic doctor told me I was less than ten years away from total knee replacement (I was 53 at the time) as the cartiledge was almost non-existent and my severe debilitating pain was from the bones rubbing together.  He prescribed Mobic but it did not help.  I used to lie in bed and cry at night because the pain was so bad that I could not get adequate sleep.  And I hurt all day long.  I was beginning to think I would not make the ten years!   About six weeks after starting the krill oil I noticed my knee was not keeping me awake and my pain had reduced about 50%.  Then sometime during this past month I suddenly realized that my pain was nothing more than a slight twinge!  I would have to describe the transformation as miraculous.    On a side note, my total cholesterol has gone from 274 to 117.  I don't know if it is the krill oil, my Armour-Thyroid I started about the same time for hypothyroidism, or a combination of the two; but I am so glad that I no longer have to take a statin.   I am so grateful for David for publishing that article and pray others have the same success that I have.

I thought I had arthritis as well, my feet have been killing me, but then it turned out that I have an extremely high content of uric acid crystals in my urine, this is the same thing that can lead to gout, plus it leads to arthritis type of symptoms. The diet that I need to be on to reduce the uric acid is a very low protein diet, and is throwing off my diabetes diet somewhat. I have been looking thru your site and others as well to find out more about the connection between type II diabetes and this condition, but have not seen enough to clarify it for me yet, though it is clearly connected. Any suggestions?
