Messages from two correspondents this week got me looking at and thinking about the Accu-Chek Aviva meter again. When it hit the market three years ago, I wrote a positive review of it for Diabetes Health magazine. But with the multitude of new meters to check out since then, I haven't been using my ...
  1. Test Meters

Not usually one to voice a complaint, David; but, all the bells & whistles on these little contraptions & still no accuracy.  The VA graciously gave me an Accu-Check Advantage & "graciously" gave me 50 test strip for 90 days.  I did relion a "relion" from Walmart since I test at least 2 x /day.  Then Accu-Check through their website offered me a free Accu-Check Aviva.  An excellent meter, by the way.  Wish I could afford the strips.  Anyway, to make a long story short, over the last several days, I have been comparing, as we all have.  Advantage averaged 24-30 points higher than the Aviva every time.  Control solutions fall in the the acceptable ranges & I even replaced the battery in my Advantage.

Certainly, I will believe the lower readings on the Aviva & will subtract 25 points from the BS readings on my VA approved Advantage.  Nuff said.

Thanks for all you do David.

My Doctor uses an Advantage and I typically bring one of my own meters and test on the same drop of blood.  The Advantage is alway 20 to 30 points higher.  It is an old meter and is probably inferior to those that have come later.

Hello David and thanks for all of your efforts to help the rest of us.

I am an 8 year Type 2 diabetic and have acquired a number of meters over the years.

I have two Avivas and they both are about 15 to 20 points higher than my Agamatrix Keynote.  The Avivas are 20 points higher than my Freestyle Flash and 25 points higher than my One Touch Ultra 2.  The Avivas are also about 20 points higher than my Accu-Check Compact.  The Keynote runs a little higher the my Freestyle Flash. They are both higher than my One Touch which gives the lowest scores usually.

I have used the control solutions on all of them and my test strips have not expired.

Based on this, I don't use the Avivas any more.  They have great blood take up strips which are the easiest to use, but I don't trust the scores.  I have on several occasions tested on all of the machines at the same time from the same puncture.  I give my finger a good puncture once all of the test strips are in the meters and test on each.  I find them all to be consistent.  With the exception of the Avivas, the scores cluster at about a 10 point spread.

I usually use the Flash in the morning to be able to test my fasting averages (95).  I use the One Touch Ultra 2 during the day for pre-meal and post meal testing.  That meter has, by far the best data management since you can indicate pre or post meal on the result and get averages for all results, pre-meal and post-meal.  I mentally add 10 points the the results.

    Regards

    Dear Tony,

Yes, that is an awfully frustrating experience. Thanks for sharing it. We all have that sort of experience -- but it's always with different brands of meters. You would think that in this high-tech society the companies could do a lot better for us.
