Flu Vaccine

You can skip your flu shot this year -- if you would rather get sick than go to work. While you hope to recover in your bed at home alone, you can reflect that you are among the 5 percent of Americans who told surveyors that they made that choice. While you're at it, you might also want to consider ...

I got my shot a couple of weeks ago.  But I have since been reading Dr. Joseph Mercola, author of the No-Grain Diet.  He feels the shot contains stuff like mercury that make it in itself, toxic and feels no one should get one.  I am ambivalent.  What to do next year?

Good question. Don't trust Mercola. But if you are concerned, you can get a flu shot that doesn't have any mercury in in. The mercury in most flu shots comes in the preservative thimerosal.

You will need to scout around for thimerosal-free vaccine. They made 50 million doses of it this year and will undoubtedly make more next year.

Instead of Mercola, see the CDC's page about it at:

But can we trust the CDC?  I know, this opening Pandora's box.......

That's not the point at all! The point is that you CAN get a flu shot that doesn't use any mercury preservative.

OK!  I was going off on another tangent.  Thank you for the info!

another reason people do not get a flu shot is the cost.  my husband gets disability and that is our only income.  he is to start on medicare next month but i have no insurance.  i also have congestive heart failure.  i have also had a stroke and a heart attack when i was told i also had type 2 diabetes.  so what about what about us that cannot a flu shot.

Yes, the cost of health care is getting higher and higher, and I know that it is a big concern for many of us.

But did you check the listing for your area in the link that I provided at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/pdf/pub_health_dept_flu_clinics.pdf ?

In my state even when you don't have insurance there are places that will give you a flu shot for $20 or even less. Where do you live and what is the cost there?

I don't get the flu shot because it has themiserol and other toxic substances, and the flu virus mutation which is going around is just as likely not to be covered by the virus design for the year.  Also, I don't want a live virus vaccination for anything, as it would automatically give me the disease in question.

I must admit that I get awful tired of all the lecturing from the media from now until spring and getting a flu shot.  I am one who is not getting a flu shot and who hasn't had the flu.  I work out daily, eat a low carb diet and is not over weight.  Even though I am 67 and can get the shot for free I got my doctor to admit that I am not kind of person this is for.  So for now I am passing on the flu shot.

Nine years ago, I had a mild case of Guillain Barre.  Consequently, most health professionals have been reluctant to give me the flu shot, so I quit asking.  Apparently, I could get a much stronger case of Guillain Barre since I have had it before.
