By David Mendosa, Health Guide Sunday, December 07, 2008
Those of us who have diabetes clearly have special dietary needs. Because of our compromised immune systems, we've got to get better nutrition than most people. Besides that, each of us have different strategies for meeting our needs. Some of us choose to eat low-carb, some low-glycemic, some low-cal...

I have been making an Energy Bars similar to these for years. I call mine Sunflower-Almond Treats  which consist of an Almond butter , almond, and sunflower seeds, base. I add a few dried prunes, carob or cocoa powder, coconut, ground flax and wheat bran. You can even add Chia Seeds for extra nutrition. For sweetener you can ad d Chicory Syrup or Agave syrup .All ingredients are put into a food processor and mixed until they come together in a ball. Divide into equal portion of a snack bar.

You can go towww.nutritiondata.com  for the nutrition in each ingredient and pretty w ell make up your own recipe. I doubt if there would be more than 1 tbsp. peanut Butter per bar , and maybe a minimal amount of nuts.

I don't know how much these bars cost but I am sure  they would be less expensive to make yourself.   Besides its fun to create your own recipes.

I assume you know that Agave syrup is about 90% fructose. Sure, it's "all natural," but fructose isn't good for us.

I used to make similar bombs out of peanut butter, stevia, protein powder, and unsweetened coconut. The problem was that they were so good I ate too many.

Hi Gretchen

I stated that you can add Chicory Syrup or Agave syrup .

I realize that Agave syrup is about 90% fructose. Personally I use Chicory Syrup

(Inulin) which is a soluble fiber that is not digested in the stomach or small intestine.

These are meant to be  eaten once in while  as a snack , not eaten every day.

for those of us who hate 'do-it-yourself' this sounds like a dream come true - if affordable.

Glad you know that. I thought perhaps other people didn't. It really ticks me off when people market something that is 90% fructose without mentioning that.
