The Case for Low Carb Diets in Diabetes Patients

David Mendosa Health Guide December 17, 2008
  • About 10 years ago I proposed to a website that I was writing for that we run articles pro and con on the value of low-carb diets for people with diabetes. I suggested that Dr. Richard K. Bernstein, the leading low carb advocate and author of Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution, write the article in favor of low-carb diets.

At that time a low-carb diet interested me, although I didn't follow it myself. And nothing came of my proposal.

But recently the people at Diabetes Self-Management had the good idea of running a "point/counterpoint debate" almost exactly as I had proposed. But they asked me instead of Dr. Bernstein to write the article in favor of low-carb diets.

I was pleased to accept their proposal for several reasons. One of them was because Diabetes Self-Management was the only major diabetes publication that had never published any of my articles.

Dr. Bernstein is the guru of low carb and I am but a follower. Still, I have faithfully followed his very low-carb diet recommendations for more than a year now. In that time I have never felt better, except for currently feeling weak from the loss of a lot of blood as a result of a prostate operation just before Thanksgiving.

Still, all the doctors who saw me at the hospital commented on how good my vital signs were. That's something I attribute to my diet, weight loss, and exercise.

I wrote the article for the Diabetes Self-Management blog a couple of months ago. They took their own sweet time in publishing it, probably because they had a hard time finding anyone to oppose me. But the article finally saw the light of day this week.

Since writing it, I can report only one thing I would change. In my article on the Diabetes Self-Management blog, I wrote that I no longer had to take any diabetes medication. Now that I have had my prostate operation I no longer have to take any medication.

You can read the mirror of my article explaining why I follow a low-carb diet at mendosa.com/lowcarb.htm
