Hello David:
In New York State I visit Adams which truly supports local farmers and the price is reasonable. To my surprise even Organic produce is very reasonably priced. I feel regular grocery stores have long ways to go to understand organic produce movement. Most of the time Sop Rite and A & P produce does not measure up to my expectations.
I do visit Whole Foods Market in Madison, NJ the prices are very high. This location was previously occupied and operated by Wild Oats until they folded. I also visit Health Shoppe in Morristown, NJ (also located at Parsippany, NJ and Chester, NJ). I have never ever found 5lb bags of fresh carrots. I eat salad regularly and it is helpful to buy carrots and celery bunch for a salad with all colors.
We also have a newly opened Farmers Market in Morristown all year round with produce from local farmers. This fresh produce is also available in open market during summer.
As a child I went to open markets in my home town where fresh produce was grown by farmers with no chemicals and cow fertilizer, picked up early in the morning and brought to the open market within five miles radius. This fresh produce was as a rule sold in two to three hours AM and PM.
My father was surprised that during my visit home I was eager to go to the open market evry morning to pick up fresh produce.
One word of caution about radioactive waste and hazardous chemicals in soil in NY and NJ States. I am sure there are similar contamination in Washington State and Colorado (Uranium and Plutonium-processing)
Good Luck in your search.
Shakun
