Waffle Cones

By amy mercer Wednesday, September 19, 2007

We took the boys to Marble Slab Cremery last night, Miles went #2 in the potty and that was his reward. It was a beautiful night, we are having a rare cool spell in the south and have turned off our ac and opened the windows and so we sat outisde with the boys at the strip mall eating ice cream from gigantic waffle cones. Miles asked me why I wasn't having any and then Will said, wait, I know, it's because you have diabetes, right? I nodded and he was very proud of himself for figuring it out for his younger brother. Dale disagreed and said, well, you really could have some if you wanted to and I got irritated because that is beside the point.

Sure, I could have some if I'd brought along my shot bag and done an extra shot, or maybe if I was on the pump I could give myself some extra insulin to cover the ice cream... but it is always easier to just say no. I may have given myself too much and gotten low, or not enough and been high all night, waking up in the middle of the night to pee and drink water. Is a waffle cone worth it?

Are the advances in diabetes technology made for us so that we can blend smoothly into society and our differences won't be as noticeable? What if I want to be noticed in part for my diabetes? After 23 years, having diabetes is a big part of who I am yet sometimes it feels like people just want me to act like I can do and can eat the things everyone else can do and can eat. Why are some people so uncomfortable hearing the things I can't do? Why should I act like diabetes doesn't make me any different from anyone else? It does, and I am different, and maybe if we were more obvious, more comfortable with our differences, maybe if we didn't try to just blend in, the movement toward a cure would come sooner.

Dear Amy:

As my dietitian told me many years ago: "It all comes to this; do you want to hang around a little bit longer or are you ready to check out?"

Do not care whether you blend in or not. Do it for yourself, your family and your own convictions!
