I am a Mom to a 13 year old who was diagnosed on 10/23/09 as tyoe 2. She had been pre-diabetic for almost a year prior to diagnoses. I went through a lot to get the testing for her as everyone said just get her to exercise more and eat less for a year before that. She gained around 50 pounds in a year and that was when they listened and referred us for her testing. I knew I was insulin resitant 3 years before she was born and suspected I was from purberty on (My Mom could not get help for me when I was a teen and my weight went up). The endo took a year working their way up in dosages in 500 mg incriments. Just before maxing out they decided she jumped to type 2 as her A1c went way high even though she dropped about 25lbs. She is doing great now, but she has had to adjust to life with insulin and pills (the funny thing is the activity level increased as the weight fell and the diet has not changed. We always ate mostly low carb). My problem is the nutrientionalist keeps harping on cutting back and not eating anything white. I know those things tend to be bad and we have always limited them to once a week of one every two weeks but she does not get being a teen I think or am I making excuses? My daughter is also a very picky eater and breakfast is hard for her. The only thing I have found she likes from a more traditional breakfast is a plain bagel with a slice of american cheese and a table spoon of breakfast sauce from McD. The suace makes or breaks it. She is just not fond of the typical breakfast and I cannot get up early enough to cooks dinner type meal. I could also use suggestions for that too. Before diagnoses she mostly skipped breakfast and lunch because she hates the tradional food unless they are the typical stereotype of teen food. Now what i have been fixing is getting old and I see her trying to slip. Oh they are also now testing for thyroid problems that were fine before the insulin was added to her medications. Any insight is appreciated so I can be ready for her next follow up and any help to keep her going well her average BG is between 70-90.


Try oatmeal, use the Old Fashion, not the "instant" processed type, 1/2 cup dry, cover with water, microwave 1 minute. Oats should be chewie not mush. Add few raisins, pecans and cinnamon. Use 2% milk and non-sugar sweetner.
