Your child is in the midst of a temper tantrum, which a kid will do no matter what his age, and before you discipline him, you stop yourself with these questions: "Maybe it's his blood sugar. Maybe he's low again. Maybe his BG readings are high. Then again, maybe he's just plain acting out."

Hi my Grandson almost 3, has what we call bad days and good days. About a month ago his behaviour was terrible as in aggressively active for about a week, then he wet the bed (never wets the bed) next day was so sleepy, took him to the doc got blood work done, blood glucose was 12.6, ended up at the hospital. They were pricking him all night and getting a normal reading of 6 and a 4 then a 5. They put it down to a behaviour problem because we had another baby 3 months before hand, whom he just adores. Well yesterday his behaviour was terrible and he wet the bed again. My Question is can suger levels go up and down, he has a referrel for more blood work to be done in the morning.. Am i thinking the wrong thing that maybe he has diabeties.
Hello:
I am sorry that your grandson is having difficulties. I will say first of all that I am not medically trained, so I am speaking from the experience as a parent. With that said, yes, blood sugar levels can rise and fall in a person depending on a great number of factors (food intake, temperature, activity, illness, etc.). Secondly, both high and low blood sugars can affect mood and behavior.
Click here to a link at the American Diabetes Association of the list of symptoms of diabetes that might help you as you determine what is wrong.
Good luck with his next set of blood tests; it sounds as if that insight will be helpful.

Thank you Beth for your reply. Lincoln does have all those symptoms and more, he also has a sweet breath even in the morning. I think the question i really wanted to ask is if 1 test shows high levels then is fine then can go up at next blood test weeks later, can he be a diabetic. We dont have a home testing kit but am thinking about buying one to keep a record so all he is having is blood tests this will be his 3rd in 2 1/2 months, so that in itself is harsh for the little guy, he will be 3 next month. We are all concerned for him. Regards Karen
