I just had my annual check-up and was told that my sugar level was a little high.  I'm here to find out what I can do to ward off, if I can, diabetes.  Any suggestions?

I was Diagnosed  Type 2 on 26 Feb. 2009. My blood sugar was 366, A1C was 14.1, cholesterol was 300, and LDL was 112. I weighted 220lbs. The doctors put me on 500mg Metformin twice a day, 10mg Lisinopril, 40mg Simvastatin and 81mg Aspirin once a day.

The doctor's nurse told me on the phone to get medical help right away because they were worried about me going into a diabetic coma. That day my sugar was 281, 5 hours after eating lunch.

On March 1st I purchased a meter and started testing before and two hours after each meal.

I stopped eating sugar, using salt, drinking coffee, beer and wine right away. I started eating salads, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, pickles, sauerkraut and homemade coleslaw. Lots of coleslaw.

Over the next several weeks I stopped eating bread, crackers, noodles and anything that contained any kind of grains. No flour at all. I check the labels on everything I buy and will not purchase any product with more than 5 or 6 net carbs per serving with the exception of chana dal. I started to use fenugreek and flax seed on my TVP oatmeal and chana dal. I drink a low carb shake for breakfast in the morning and eat the TVP oatmeal at lunch. I bought like 25 pounds of it and have recently been making what I call TVP carrot cake. I have a piece at lunch almost every day instead of the TVP oatmeal. I eat about 1 oz of tuna fish every day. I have started eating peanuts, sunflower seeds and almonds everyday.

My weight slowly dropped to 191 lbs over the next several months. Lately I put on a few lbs and have weighted around 195 lbs for several months.

My morning blood sugar has slowly dropped from the 200-300 range, to an average of about 75. Recently I started testing on the peaks (1 hour after eating) and most of the time it's under 120.

I read an article about drinking your vegetables. I found a product for $7.50 a quart, a 30 day supply, that is supposed to be nutritionally equivalent to 5 servings of over 40 fruits and vegetables. It has 4 net carbs per serving and since I started drinking the stuff my sugar has dropped a lot, especially in the morning.

I recently have started taking the Equate Fiber Therapy supplement. I bought it at Wal-Mart for less then $8.00. At 2 serving a day, once in the morning and at night, I figure it should last for two to three months. Since taking the fiber my blood sugars has gotten even better. I almost gave up my goal of getting my A1C below 5.0 but since using the supplement, I now see that it's possible.  Also my LDL and total cholesterol has dropped a lot. LDL 112 to 79 and total cholesterol 166 to 127 in one month.

After about seven weeks of taking the meds I couldn't tolerate the side effects any more and quit taking them. My blood sugar continued to drop week after week and my blood pressure has been around 110/70 since I stopped taking the meds. My last A1C was 5.9 taken last June and Monday I will be testing again. I'm hoping for a better number. My blood sugar readings have been very good recently and I hoping some day to get it below A1C 5.0.
