I was told on my last visit to my doctor, in may that I have diabetes. A1C 6.4. She didn't come out and say, 'you have diabetes'. She was reading off my lab results and I heard diabetes. I asked her why she didn't mention it. She said since the number was low and I lead a healthy life style there was no reason too. Meds were not needed. Of course, I immediately went on-line to learn everything I could and made some big changes in my diet. I do not check my blood glucose at all. Dr said she would do the A1C again in October. Is she right on or should I seek medical care elsewhere?

Measurement of the A1C level is a great idea for people with diabetes -- to judge how well the diabetes has been managed over the past few months (see here for more information about the A1C).
It's unclear to me why your physician ordered this test, as it's not a screening test for diabetes. And if the level were somewhat elevated (as yours seems to be, depending on the normal range for the test in the laboratory your physician used), it would seem appropriate for the physician to jump all over it, getting confirmatory blood glucose levels, and getting you started on a meal plan, and measuring your own BG levels at home.
I'm puzzled. Ask your physician for clarification!
Hope this helps.
Yes, Your advice does help. A lot.
Thank you.
