My Mom is an 80 year old woman who weighs in at a whopping 101 pounds.  Last year she had a surgical procudure called the Whipple and has had about 1/4 to 1/3 of her pancreas removed.  She is now having blood sgars in the range of 140-190.  She has seen a dietician and she recommend counting carbs and not going over 30-45 carbs per meal.  I am wondering how she will gain weight.  We know that we have to balance the carbs and protein but this is very hard as she eats like a bird.  Does anybody have any suggestions on diet for her?

The Dr. did give her a script for metformin but she has not yet began to take it.  She had some liver issues (high ALT and AST) so I am nervous about suggesting she take it.  She is also scheduled for a CT scan in a few weeks so thought it would be best to wait.  Any comments?
