The Saga of a Type-2 Diabetic!

  • Who raised or lowered the bar - the numbers? I just got my lab results back, I am very excited my A1c is 5.3% but did you know that is high. The normal range is now 4.0% - 5.2%, so who raised the bar on the A1c test normal range.
  • This is the second time in 6 months that my A1c has been 5.3% to which I say , "Praise the Lord!" The control range chart in my endocrinologist's office has the A1c at 6.5% for the magic number and is the target range to get us to which I achieved and beyond.
  • Now that is totally different when it comes to testing the A1c. I must be out of touch with the standard numbers and when the numbers were lowered for the normal range. The normal range and the control range are different set of numbers. So, I ask when the the normal range in the A1c test changed? Does anyone know?
  • I started Byetta on June 1, 2007 and now have been able to loose 30.5 pounds and a total weight lost of 38 pounds in 18 months. A major accomplishment for me. Was the main purpose of Byetta to loose weight no? The main purpose was to get my blood sugar in control, which Byetta has done.
  • So now for another interesting set of numbers. I got a phone call from my endocrinologist this week with lab results of my cholesterol. He didn't like the numbers and I am taking the highest does of Simvastatin which he increased in November and my numbers were normal then but not low enough as the bar has been raised for us Type-2's.
  • I thought to myself what was going on because I was doing all I could do. So in the mail I got a new prescription for Vytorin and my lab results. My numbers have continually gone down. Who lowered the numbers for diabetics? Because my numbers are in the normal range but on the high side of the normal range.

Chol = 180 high side of normal (0-200), Trig = 200 high side of normal (0-250), HDL 43 low side of normal (30-85), LDL-d = 114 high side of normal (0-130), and a new one called VLDL = 40 with no normal range targets.

So who out there has 0 chol, 0 trig, 85 HDL, 0 LDL-d? Because I want to meet you!

  • I was stressed out over the phone call and figured my cholesterol went up. So who came along a lowered the bar for us diabetics? Anyone know the answer?

Ah Ha! The American Diabetes Association has the target for us.

What are the recommended targets for blood lipids?

Type of Blood Lipid ADA Targets

LDL cholesterol = below 100 mg/dl
HDL cholesterol Men = above 40 mg/dl
HDL cholesterol Women = above 50 mg/dl
Triglycerides = below 150 mg/dl
  • I want to thank them for their concern and please know I am not trying to be a smart just educate myself and know where I have to go in the numbers. For me to get these results I have to take medication which I have been and am willing to change it providing it works and causes no side affects. But it would have been nice if the doctor would of told me the target range so I know where I have go, not where I have been.
  • Now on the other side of the Metabolic Syndrome, what does one do to get their blood pressure normal. My systolic number is high and has been high for years and I have tired 4 new meds in the past year and none worked for me and 2 had nasty side affect that I could not tolerate, one raised my BP higher and the one did nothing. A beta blocker, an alpha beta blocker, a calcium channel blocker and a dihydropyridine. I am currently take an ARB - Benicar/HCT it doesn't work either but my doctor wants me to continue to take it since it protects the kidneys for diabetics.
