I am a diabetic, have been for six years.Up until about 2 years ago I have been controled with diet only. For the past two years I have been taking meds and fighting my blood sugar. I started on glucophage, worked well for a while then my sugar started climbing up. SO we added Beata (Spelling). I was only on that for a while because I had some problems but think I may want to try it again. After that I was on Glocavance but that bottomed out my blood sugar.

What I really need is advice on dieting because I am obviously not doing that well. I have tried every diet known to man. I have never been able to keep weight off. I also need and exercise plan that I can work with. What works for you? Maybe it can help me.

Thank you

I have been recently diagnosed, and having sugar levels controled with diet quite easily. I just changed my eating times and kept from overloading on carbs at a meal, and actually lost 20 lbs. ( went from 225 down to 205 ).

One site that I think is pretty good is www.ediets.com  They do have a monthly charge, several diet options, and an exercise program. They also have fitness and nutrition people you can ask questions. One of their diets is "Living With Diabetes" which complies with current American Heart and American Diabetes guidelines. They have you weigh in weekly, and will let you adjust calories up or down depending if you are gaining weight, losing weight too fast, or just staying the same. They do have a place where you can except certain foods that you can't stand or are allergic too.

They have support blogs and such on the site, and what is good is they combine both the exercise and diets in one place. They show you how to exercise with the equipment you have, so you don't have to buy anything if you don't want to.

As far as your diet is concerned, you need to eat lower carb and more protein and don't forget the fiber - that keeps us regulated. Just remember white bread, starchy foods are NOT our friend. Basically, you can eat chicken, lean pork, fish (not too much shrimp, crab or lobster), salads are great and healthy. Fruits are excellent as long as you don't go nuts! And, try to eat fiber foods good for digestive - celery, pears, beans(kidney, black beans, lima)are all good fiber sources for you. Sorry, the pastas and pizzas are a no-no. I do indulge every once in a while, but I know I shouldn't have that stuff. There are books you can buy for diabetic recipes - that might help you too. Good luck! Jill

I have been Type II for a little over 2 years.  I was on Amaryl & Metformin.  Amaryl made me bottom out so I got off of that and was just on the Met.  I made a serious life change in April of this year, I weighed 252 lbs. (my husband weighed over 300 lbs.).  The medical field says you can have up to 18 carb choices a day.  I feel that is too many if you are trying to lose weight.  I have anywhere from 10-14/day. It has been a little over 5 months and I have lost 55 lbs. (hubby 100).  I am not on medication now, just controlling with diet and exercise.  My blood sugar this AM was 86, usually it is in the 90's. My typical daily menu:

BREAKFAST

1 c. Fiber1 cereal (13g fiber)

3/4 c. skim milk

LUNCH

Lean cousine or Healthy Choice Panini

1 apple

SUPPER

-Egg Beaters (equal to 4 eggs)

-2 slices Fat Free Cheeze

-Mushrooms/Onions (sauteed in Pam, a little "I can't believe It's Not Butter" spray)

-Salsa (I use Chi-chi's, it's the lowest sodium salsa I can find)

-Asparagus steamed (about 20 stalks=65 calories)

-1 apple

SNACKS

- fat free/sugar free pudding cup

-a couple of sugar free jello cups

-coffee w/skim milk,splenda,cinnamon

-fruit(1c.watermelon,canteloupe,strawberries)

Anyway I eat about 1400 calories a day but if it's a day that I am gonna exercise I always check my blood sugar first and eat according to what it reads.  So I may eat an additional 200 calories on that day.

My Cholesterol has gone from 206 to 121.

My Triglycerides ..................375 to 111.

My LDL..........................is currently 66.

My A1C ..........................12.6 to 5.8.

I hope this helps you and good luck on your journey. :)

I forgot to mention that when I first strted my life change I ate 2000 calories/day teh first 2 weeks and then 1800 for 2 wks........1600 etc.  I weined myself off of sugar & salt slowly.  I now use Mrs. Dash, she has several spice mixes that I love.......

Garlic & herb

Onion & herb

I also did a gradual exercise program at about the same pace as the calorie reduction.  When I first started to exercise I could barely do 10 min. on the treadmill.  I worked up gradually to where I was doing an hour on the treadmill and an hour on a stationary recumbent bike.  I have cut back now and I do 45-60 min on the treadmill at the highest incline I can tolerate (5-7) and I go about 2.8-3.2 miles per hour, you have to sweat.

There is loads of free information and recipes that I beleive you will find of interest.  Let me know how it goes.
