Well meaning family members

By robbo Tuesday, May 08, 2007

I have had diabetes, Type I, for 35+ years, and I am 49 (I'm holding at this age!).  I also have had Bipolar Illness for a long while.  My gripe is how people percieve my behavior.

The minute I get confused about something, or am distracted from a conversation, the next words are "Are you low?" or "Did you check your blood sugar?".  They are well meaning, but I was confused long before I got diabetes!

Also, if I am tired, sad, mad, or irritable, it is always explained by someone else as due to my blood sugar or needing an adjustment in my bipolar medication.  99% of the time, neither is true.

I would like to live in a world where I can get tense or confused for my own reasons, and not mediated by some medication or some blood sugar level.  I am used to it by now, but it would still be nice to be mad for the right reasons...

I completely understand where you are coming from on family/friends asking you if you are low or if you need to check your blood sugar. I am also bipolar and Type 1 diabetic. The diabetic has been for almost 7 years now and the bipolar is something new as of November 2006. I'm still trying to find a medication that does not affect my diabetes and my psychiatrists latest try has really screwed it badly this time. I now know why especially after reading an article on Atypical Antipsychotics and Diabetes. I was on Geodon. I took myself off of them after reading this article.
