Just Diagnosed with Type I

By Javahed Wednesday, July 29, 2009

Howdy - I'm a 38 year old fitness instructor/security contractor that was just diagnosed with Type I diabetes about 2 weeks ago. I've been on insulin now for a week. This was a bit of a surprise for me but hey - life is full of those right?  Wink

I sure will - it's interesting - trying to figure out how intense exercise changes things - that vs less intense but long duration - and altitude mixed in with it all, hahaha. Now I'll be forced to finally start keeping exact track of my diet :)

I can relate!!  I'm getting ready to go out in the sticky DC weather and that makes for a blood sugar challenge, let alone the intensity of the workout!  Read Ginger's posts on exercise , or two of our teens that I love to read:  Svati and Anna, who is getting ready to do the Pikes Peak Ascent!  Regardless of the age, we are all in the same boat and I often find the kids have more great advice on exercise than most adults! lol!

Hi,

I found at last year as well, we're about the same age. I found that that Dr. Bernstein's book the Diabetes Solution is the best book for type 1's. Also, you should subscribe to David Mendosa's website to stay current on the disease. Hope this helps!

Wow, I can't help but wonder how did you not find this out that you were type 1 before now! Before you were 38???

Yes, intensity, duration and heat all are factors in how much blood sugar levels drop. Or at least they have seemed to be for me. I cycle a couple of days a wekk, nothing hardcore but I go non-the-less. One thing I did definitely notice as that as summer came a long and the heat kicked in... my numbers dropped more, noticeably more.

One thing I noticed fairly early on too is that it drops while exercising but also keeps dropping pretty significantly to for a little bit. I always check as soon as I am done riding and then as soon as I get home or at the first stop. A friend and I ride in the mornings a lot so we will stop to eat lunch on the way home sometimes if we got a late start. It will usually at least another 15 or 20 points in just that next twenty minutes to half hour also so don't only check when you fist get done! I would say check a half hour later also. My glucose levels pretty much always drop at least 20 pts minimum, usually more like 30 and sometimes this summer as much as 50. So definitely stay on top of it! If it is a long workout, stop an hour in and test. It can be a hassle but it's always better to be safe!

When in doubt... TEST.

Good luck & keep us posted!
