This thing is tough

By Davis Skye Tuesday, February 02, 2010

Well, the low carb diet is tough to maintain. Especially with two young kids and a sudden "different" way of eating. Though I'm still doing well in my opinion, I have have caved for the sake of convenience on occasion and now, to my chagrin, finding myself consuming carbs with 2 meals a day. Though seemingly miniscule, 20 g of carbs on a mere 8th of a quiche and few coutons on a greek salad have upped my blood sugar readings by about 15 points.

I just have to say no. But, I also wonder if this isn't a bit of physiological acclimation in that when I started the low carb I saw a dramatic drop in my blood sugar and now my body is adapting. Definitely, the gluconeogensis is strong in diabetics. That must be where the sugar is coming from. My liver doesn't know when to stop and my cells just can't take it up.

I'm really trying to avoid meds. It is a dietary disease in my opinion and I'm sure that I can manage it. Very frustrating, and time consuming though. At 41, I'm hoping to live a very long life. My father was diagnosed with Type 2 when he was 50 and now he's 73 and managing it well with metformin and another that I keep forgetting. He said his blood sugar was 1800 when he was diagnosed. Eef.

I just read David Mendosa's post about Omega-3 and NAFLD. There are so many variables to good health, but every little piece of information helps. Thanks for that David.

Davis,  If you are trying to manage your diabetes with nutrition and exercise, go for it!   I suggest you check out a blog by Tom Ross at  http://www.notmedicatedyet.com/blog/blog.html.  He is doing it with nutrition and exercise, and has for several years.
