For years, I tried and tried to lose weight: Weight Watchers, low-carb diets, diabetic diets -- I gave up after staying awake all night one night considering self-surgery on all the fat parts of me. I decided I should be healthy, and blow off the beauty. My doctor and I agreed that I would visit him as needed and do everything he suggested, but he was not to discuss my weight with me. Then a few years later, I mysteriously lost 40 pounds, and the doctor, as agreed, never mentioned it to me. Then I began to feel really terrible, and I mentioned the surprising weight loss to him. Diagnosis: diabetes.
I got my blood sugars down with diet, medication (including Byetta for a while), and exercise. I am not now, nor will I ever be, svelte, and despite my sister's belief that I suffer from some sort of moral failing, I continue to be happy with myself. I wear a size 18 now, instead of the size 24+ when I was diagnosed, and it's good enough.
Sometimes, good enough is enough!
