Weight Loss and Nagging

By Gretchen Becker, Health Guide Monday, December 19, 2011
America is in the midst of an "obesity epidemic," and one of the ways to deal with it is to educate overweight people about the dangers of being overweight. That makes sense. Warn them of the dangers of being overweight and they'll be inspired to lose.   Except it doesn't work.   A 2011...

Well, eating for many people is an emotional thing, so fixing the underlying problems would be a far better solution and healthier for everyone! Making people feel better about themselves is always something we should strive for. In my life, I do my best to make people feel better about themselves no matter what the situation.

A commendable attitude, even if sometimes difficult to do.

"But at least someone should campaign to educate physicians, nurses, and diabetes educators about the negative results that often result from nagging people about their weight. Then maybe we'd see a "weight-loss epidemic.""

That indeed would be wonderful!  I can imagine the years of education this will take to undue the habits of the medical profession, it is worth the effort.

Bob, I think attitudes are changing, albeit slowly. More and more physicians, especially younger ones with different medical school training, are seeing patients as partners instead of as passive recipients of their expertise.

I hope their attitudes toward weight will change as well. We can always hope.

I am fighting the battle to stop doing height and weight measurements in elementary and middle schools in our county. The thought by many is that it will help the children adopt healthy lifestyles. I have provided evidence to the contrary but yet the idea prevails that it is the schools responsibility to point out a child's weight. I appreciate another piece of evidence to add to my arsenal. For now at least my own children are not being weighed nor are many of my friends' children. Baby steps.....

Yes it must be humiliating for fat kids to be weighed all the time! Fat people know they're fat.

Thank you for such an enlightening article.  I was completely shocked.  I thought that if I continuously was reading, weighing and seeing shows on weight loss, that I would be motivated to lose the weight.  Instead, I have been self sabotaging myself.  I get it now.  I do not have to make myself suffer to learn.  This is going to be a new beginning for me.  In 2012, I am going to stop hurting myself mentally and and focus on positive steps to losing weight.

My goals for 2012:  eat healthy, move/exercise, beginner meditation to exercise my brain in a positive helpful way.  Who's team am I on anyway?!  ;)

Happy New Year to You!  Please keep posting.

Hi Rena, I'm on your team too! We all are, because we know how difficult it is. But you can succeed. Read Mendosa's blog about hiking and photography and find something you enjoy as much as he enjoys hiking and photographing and focus on that instead of beating yourself up.

Go Rena!
