Most people with type 2 diabetes will not use insulin pumps, but that doesn’t mean that some won’t. So this editorial is of interest to everyone. It applies to continuous glucose monitors as well as pumps.
Basically, it says that although the metal detectors used when you go through airport security do not affect insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors, the full-body scans some airports require may damage them.
What is scary is that they describe a situation in which a teenager with a pump was forced to go through the full-body scan despite having a doctor’s note asking for a body pat-down instead, which is supposed to be allowed.
Further study may show that the problem is not serious, but until more studies are done, it’s important to know that there could be a problem. Hence it would be prudent to carry alternative supplies when traveling by plane.
