Continuous Glucose Monitor Options And The Discontinuation of the Navigator

By Gretchen Becker, Health Guide Tuesday, November 13, 2007
Rumors are flying that the Abbott Navigator, a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), will be discontinued even before it receives FDA approval. Layoffs at the company are said to be in the works, according to a Reuters news release.   Abbott denies the rumors, according to a second Reuters stor...

Many people have been waiting for this meter.  And I had received a briefing on it a few years back at an ADA meeting.  But that was when Therasense had the device and had applied for FDA approval.  The purchase of Therasense by Abbott might have put a kink in the process since Abbott modified the application soon after the purchase.  However, the companies committment to this device should not be questioned.  The FDA seems to take its time on some things and expedites others.  And I have to question what sort of nonsense might be going on.  We need this device on the market (none will be perfect) and this hopefully will drive down the cost of having this device.  CGM, I feel, will become the standard of care.  Also, the Navigator has a glucose meter built into it for calibration purposes.  I have seen the device and the type 1 bicycle team over the summer used them. All the members collected data and Abbott might use this for the basis for other studies on the use of CGM and glucose levels during exercise.  They currently are the only ones with that sort of data under different environments.  So that might prove to be very exciting.

Time will tell.

No one will say why it is taking Abbott so long to get FDA approval for their CGM. They initially asked the FDA to approve the devices as replacements for regular BG meters. In other words, you wouldn't need to confirm the readings with your regular meter.

Paul T2, the Navigator has been approved. This is an old post that was uploaded before the approval.
