Hemochromatosis is an iron-overload disease. People with the hemochromatosis gene absorb more iron from their diet than other people, and this can damage many body organs, including the pancreas. The latter damage can cause diabetes.
Most people consider hemochromatosis to be found primarily in peop...

This could not have come at a better time. My doctor just found my ferritin levels to be very high, and is concerned about this. ( I'm half Irish). One more things to look into!

There's more at iron at my own blog site. I'm a quarter Irish.
Thanks! I'll check it out!

I have friends with hemochromatosis.
But I have the OPPOSITE of this problem.
I HAVE to take loads of iron every day or
my hemoglobin will plummet. My ferritin is
always low-no matter how much iron I take.
This condition seems to be rarer- although lots of
people suffer from low iron.
Noone yet has found a gene responsible for this
although I suspect there is one!

JG,
Just got my latest labs, my ferritin is 894, and you can have as much as you want!

Gracie and JG: Isn't it too bad we can't trade our particular body constituents. Both too much iron and not enough iron are bad. When you think about it, it's amazing that most people are healthy most of the time. Our bodies are in delicate balance with so many things. Too little glucose is as bad as too much, and the same is true of so many different chemicals. I don't know how the body keeps track <G>.
We should all be gratefull, as long as our skewed conditions
can be kept under control. Although if I ever were to marry
again, I look for someone with hemochromatosis.
( I would consider it a positive!)
