My name is Travis Grubbs. I wear a few hats that include: Building & Zoning Inspector, Home Inspector, Part-Time Writer (or Writer Wannabee), and Type 2 Diabetic. The last two hats have resulted in my writing a monthly column for dLife, "Turn the Page". It can be found at http://www.dlife.com/dLife/do/ShowContent/daily_living/Viewpoints/grubb_bio.html

Let's be honest. If you have type 2 diabetes you are probably not a stranger to being over weight, over eating, fast food, sweets, a high carbohydrate diet, a sedentary life style, etc. I was "one of those" until my world was rocked out of its orbit when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in May 2006. I received a crash course in Diabetes Management and was sent out to face a "New World", with doctor's orders to gain control of my type 2 diabetes.
You have probably "been there and done that", or you may still be in the "been there" phase. I guess we never really get out of that phase, but I am making it my mission to get as many of my fellow T2's from "been there" to "done that" that I can. Another honest fact (from which I have no numbers to support), there are folks that get left behind or fall by the way side by not getting control of their diabetes. For me that's not acceptable. I want those people back on the right track.
I realize that I (and we) can't fix people, but I (and we) can certainly encourage the crap out of them! And that is my humble mission. I would appreciate you joining me in this endeavor. I will be posting a share post column entitled "Encouragement (Sugar-Free)".

Senior type 2. need more exercise and can't do more due to the cold weather in Montreal Quebec Canada so no walking in the winter and sometime no driving due to black ice or a lot of snow. I have had no luck with eating less and losing weight. I am on oral meds. Personally I hate exercise and I did some all my working life. Also have a colonoscopy so find I can not get out early in the morning and most of the exercise classes are to early for me. So any ideas. These are reasons not excuses (LOL). Of course if I got up at six a.m. I could probably get out of my house by 9a.m. Any ideas
Thank you
Regards
PS I also get mail from dlife and don't remember your name.
Lorraine:
I don't know what to say about your lack of luck eating less and losing weight other than what a Physician / Nutritionist told me: "Be honest with yourself as to how much you are eating." I used to think that I was not eating that much. I started cutting back by reducing my portions at supper by half. After a few hours I was hungry. After a few days I was losing weight.
As for exercising options I would suggest standing or sitting, and lifting 1 to 2 pound weights over your head, holding them out in front of you, etc. If you can't afford to buy some weights, use a couple of one pound cans (canned vegetables, etc.). If they are too heavy, try the half-pound sizes. BUT first discuss the dietary and the exercise suggestions with your doctor.
As for dLife, I was featured in their Newsletter many months ago. My column can be viewed at http://www.dlife.com/dLife/do/ShowContent/daily_living/Viewpoints/grubb_bio.html
Don't let my beardless face scare you!
Take care,
