Hi Melinda
One of the best things you can do is to subscribe to an e-mail "mailing list." There you'll find other people who have been through the same thing and who understand what you're going through.
You can get a list of the various lists, along with short reviews, at David Mendosa's site:
I'm on 2 lists:
To subscribe to the World list, go to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/diabetesworld
To subscribe to Diabetes International, go to:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/diabetes_int
You should also take a look at the Health Central site for type 1
Hang in there. This disease can be controlled when you get the knowledge. You might qualify for a pump.
Holidays are the worst!
you can find balance and comfort, you probably need to consider setting a strict time schedule for yourself, get up the same time, take medicine the same time, eat the same time, and find a regular balance. Low sugars are very frustrating, and other people around you often tend to overreact, which can be embarrasing.
It does not help me that I get symptoms backwards, first I'll feel a little loopy, my nose gets cold, so I check and sure enough too low, as soon I start to treat then the shakes and headache start.
I keep a little plastic container on the outside of my bg kit that holds 4 glucose tabs (or my preference giant smarties), for the weird just in case times. I got the case from a little speciality store (which sadly closed their doors last summer), but I am sure they are available online.
Don't get discouraged, you will find your right answers, and it will become natural, not so scary.
and everyday, I am greatful I can feel my feet!
Hi Rosiesmom!
Don't beat yourself up. I am sure as a nurse, you are not paying as much attention to your own health because you are too busy taking care of others!!
This is a great place for help when you are feeling down. I know when I first started working on my diabetes, I wasn't doing very well. I wasn't on insulin because I am insulin resistant, but that seemed to make it even more difficult. Then there was the issue of trying to learn to give up pastas and rice. (ouch!)
Anyway, being a nurse, you already know most of what I am going to pass along here, but it never hurts to reread and refresh yourself. There are some great resources here on Health Central and here are a few links to them.
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, as you were, but yours began as gestational diabetes. I didn't realize there was a difference between diabetes diagnosis. I figured diabetes is diabetes, right? So the first thing I read was the overview about diabetes located here. Then I moved on to the symptoms because I realized that I had symptoms I was not expecting and I did not exhibit symptoms I thought I should which contributed to my not getting medical help for some time. The symptoms list is located here. Then I started looking into the medications I was being prescribed. Found out why some drugs were causing certain effects and others weren't working well. The drug database is located here. Finally, I figured, there has to be a better way and I checked into the treatment database to learn about new treatments and new protocols. I have also been an avid reader of David Mendosa for sometime (profile shareposts)
Most of all, there is this fantastic community here of people just like you living it all one day at a time. If you ever feel the need to vent or want to share a particularly good day for you, or just need to ask a question, feel free to post and lots of folks will answer.
Hope some of this helps! We're here for you if you need an ear, so stay in touch and let us know how you're doing!
