How do you let them grow up?

By Michele Thursday, April 30, 2009

My daughter has been diabetic for 9 years now, we are really close and get along fine most days.

When she was young she had really bad low blood sugars in the night.  So years ago I started checking her every couple hours at night.  She has a pump and I am getting better I only check 2 or 3 times during the night now.

She is in high school and has always been very independent, but the time is getting closer that she will be off to college.  How do parents of diabetics let them go?

Hi Michelle: This is such a tough question that simple comments will not do it justice. Since this issue pops up so many times in my day to day contact with my patients and families, you have  inspired me to write my next blog about it: "Letting go..." Look for it in the next several weeks. A very simple answer: how do you let them go? You just have to because they need to leave. The strategy is preparation and peace of mind. Looking forward to your comments shortly.
