somewhere between type 1 and type 2

56 yr old male, diagnosed about 8 years ago with diabetes. Discovered that I had an issue one morning while eating an apple fritter about an hour before a lab test and then recording a 240 reading. Did a glucose tolerance test which resulted in 300 reading after first 2 hours. Have not taken drugs for my problem yet - currently HBA1C of about 6.5, but had it down to low 5's at one time. Have started back on the bandwagon now and hope to get it back down to that number again.
Also have rheumatoid arthritis , for which I take methotrexate. In the opinion of my endocrinologist, this is probably helping my diabetes actually and is preventing my beta cells from burhing out prematurely. I have low triglycerides (66), low overall cholesterol (about 150), am thin (5'9 - 155 lbs), HDL of around 45 (seems to vary quite a bit on different lab tests - not sure what is going on there) and HDL around 109. So, I don't exactly fit the profile of a type 2, and thus believe I'm somewhere between a type 1 and type 2.
Things I've noticed - if I don't eat anything after 9 p.m. at night, my morning blood sugar levels are usually lower. Any starchy carbos (cereal, toast, oatmeal, etc) always ensures a rapid spike pushing towards 200 after 1 hour. Blood sugar does tend to drop back considerably by the end of the 2nd hour however. Thus , I am trying to avoid those carbos and choose fruit, rather than grain products , wherever possible. We shall see where this all ends up. I think my endo would like to see me on some sort of insulin, but is willing to let me see if I can improve my situation with diet.
