Switched to Actos

I saw my doctor 2 days ago and switched from Avandia to Actos. Maybe, at some point, the FDA will say that Actos also increases the risk of a heart attack. Am I putting potentially harmful chemicals in my body?

FDA issues an alert on Avandia

May 21st, 2007 the FDA issued an alert about a 43% increased risk of heart attacks when taking Avandia. I have been taking Avandia for about 6 months. I plan to continue to take Avandia at least until I see my doctor in 6 weeks. Actos is in the same chemical class as Avandia. I wonder if Actos may have similar risks. People with diabetes already have a higher than average risk of having a heart...

Just spoke with my doctor about Byetta

I just saw my doctor last week. She said that she has not prescribed Byetta yet to any of her patients. I am going to see her again in 6 weeks and she said that she will be referring me to an Endocrinologist about the possibility of starting on Byetta. My hemaglobin A1C was very good. And my cholesterol was good, except my HDL (good cholesterol) should be higher. I take Zocor for my cholesterol and she suggested...

lizard spit

I am originally from Tucson, Arizona. I grew up living in the desert. I recently read that Byetta comes from a synthetic version of a protein derived from Gila monster's saliva. What will they come up with next?

Gila Monster saliva?

I keep reading about Byetta. I really would like to lose some weight and I heard about widespread weight loss with Byetta. I'm going to talk to my doctor about it next time I see her. However, I'm not sure that I am the right kind of candidate.

it's a difficult disease to manage

I have educated patients about how to check their bloodsugars and give themselves insulin. I have reinforced with them the importance of proper diet and exercise and educated them about medication. I have provided nursing care for many patients with complications related to diabetes. Despite my years of education and experience, I have learned alot more in the past 2 years since being diagnosed...

The ghost of midnight snack

I often have difficulty sleeping. I take a sleeping medication called Ambien. I think that sometimes when I take this medication I do things that I can't remember. Once, I ate my roommates animal crackers and don't remember eating them. Yesterday, after waking up I discovered 3 empty containers of yogurt at my bedside.

A moment of optimism

I recently read about how Diabetes was treated in the past. Pre-insulin survival was not very good and treatment and understanding of the disease was very limited. So many advancements in just the last several years. New drugs and treatments. I can live with this disease. I can reduce my risks of life threatening complications. I can find hope.
