how does it take to start losing weight from byetta?

By amy1979 Saturday, August 18, 2007

i need to know how long will it take to start losing weight with the byetta

and i am currently taking it  and it works with keeping blood sugars under control.

Should people on insulin change their doses on their own?

Dear Amy,

The short answer is that it depends on you.

Losing weight on Byetta is not automatic. Byetta helps you to lose weight because it reduces your appetite. So you can eat less than you have before. It's the eating less that causes you to lose weight.

But you don't have to eat less, and when people don't change their eating habits they don't lose very much weight. In the clinical trials of Byetta people were told not to change their lifestyles. As a consequence they lost only about 6 pounds in 30 weeks. However, if you listen to your body and eat less you can lose a lot of weight.

I know. When I started taking Byetta on February 6, 2006, I weighed 312 on the scales in my doctor's office. The next time I weighed on his scales was March 23, 2006, when I weighed 290. Now I weigh 179.

Another thing: when you start on Byetta it's the 5 mcg pen. After a month or so your doctor will increase it to a 10 mcg pen. That will not only help you to get better blood glucose control but also make it easier for you to lose weight.

Good luck. If you like, you may write me directly at mendosa@mendosa.com or call me at (303) 499-5544.

I use 40mg of lantus in the morning and Metformin in the morning and one in the evening.  I asked my Dr about Byetta and he perscribed the 10 mg for me and said to stop the lantus.  I have been reading message boards though and people say they take lantus in the evening. Should you take lantus at night? Also can metformin and lantus be taken together?  Thanks, M.C

Dear Neha,

The best ways that I know for people with diabetes to lose weight are (1) to take a new type of medicine of which Byetta is one example and (2) to eat very little starch and sugar.

The medicine that Byetta is a type of is called a GLP-1 agonist. After writing this article two more medicines of this type now exist: Victoza and Bydureon. They are also great for weight loss.

Eating very little sugar and starch is called a very low-carb diet. By very little I mean fewer than 50 grams of carbohydrate each day.

These are the two best ways that I know for us to use weight. I know this from my personal experience.

Namaste,

David

Dear Neha,

I think that I need to defer to your doctor's recommendations about these questions.

Namaste,

David
