Diabetes, Pregnancy and Halle Berry

Pregnancy Tracker: 6 months down! Size of the Baby: 1.3 pounds. Biggest Obstacle: Patience, I've got four more months to go!   What do Halle Berry and I have in common? Sadly, it's not movie star looks and paychecks. However, we're both currently experiencing a diabetic p...

Kelsey,

I too have been thinking about Halle Berry and her pregnancy, this is the perfect opportunity for her to shed light on the importance of tight control during pregnancy.

I am 36 and have 2 healthy boys, ages 6 and 3. My pregnancies were a lot of work, but of course well worth the effort because my boys were delivered in perfect health!

I don't know if you share the same frustration, but something that bothered me during my pregnancies was the lack of information about diabetes and pregnancy...I felt like even though I was getting great support from my medical team of doctor, nutritionist and educator, I felt isolated in the challenges of a diabetic pregnancy.

So...that is part of the reason I was motivated to create the anthology, Dreaming About Water, a collection of personal essays and practical advice by and for women with diabetes. www.dreamingaboutwater.wordpress.com.

Sorry to go on and on. I really wanted to say congratulations and keep up the good work! And thanks for reminding me about the flu shot!

As a T1, I skipped the flu shot when I was pregnant due to concerns about the thimersol (mercury) preservative in the shot. You did not mention that in your post as a consideration for pregnant women.

BTW Halle Berry recently said at a fundraiser she is a T2.

Thanks for the tip about the mercury in the flu shot, I've never heard about those concerns. I'm planning to ask my doctor whether she recommends the shot for pregnant woman or not on Monday.  I'll be sure to post about her response.

Sorry to disappoint any fellow type 1 diabetics, but have you heard Halle's recent comments about her condition. (She was recently on Oprah and made NO mention of her condition. I was disppointed b/c I too thought she could be a role model for pregnant type 1's). Then, a few days ago she appeared on Inside the Actors Studio and made baffling comments about her condition. She said that she is technically "type 1" but has managed to "wean" herself "off of insulin" and now likes to put herself in the "type 2"  catergory. I was stunned, confused, and very hurt by her comments.

Just wanted to share the latest.

I know this is way way past but I'm so sick of this. She is a Ketosis Prone Type 2 Diabetic. This is a common type of diabetes amongst people of color in this country. There are an estimated 1,000,000 of them in the US alone. They present with acute onset like type 1 but after withdrawal of insulin will actually be type 2. Here’s a brief video on it: http://myown.oprah.com/audition/index.html?request=video_details&response_id=8826&promo_id=1

Here’s a blog on it: http://ketosisprone.blogspot.com/
