About Me

I was born and brought up in Montreal, Quebec. I was educated at McGill University, B.Sc 1968, honours in Math/Chemistry, then went on to Universite de Montreal for two years of dentistry school. You may ask "What happened?" The answer lies in one word: CAMP.

I moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, married the camp nurse Marilyn (32 years now),and went back to Mount St. Vincent University for a Bachelor of Education degree 1973. I started a wonderful 31-year teaching career as a Math Department Head at a local high school. Marilyn and I were blessed with two great daughters, Melanie and Lara.

In 1985, our family was hit with an obstacle: Lara was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 6 years. However, with the wonderful assistance of Dr. Bruce Morton, our camp founder, my family coped with the necessary lifestyle changes and Lara is today a confident, beautiful andhealthy young woman. Of course, Dr. Morton discovered immediately that I had all this camp experience and pounced ( as all of us do when we are presented with a volunteer). Of course I didn't need a lot of coaxing!

I have been involved with the running of the camps in Nova Scotia for 18 years. I served as the National Camp Chairman of the Canadian Diabetes Association. I was a founding member of the Diabetes Camping Association and have served on the Board, as Vice-President and Conference Chairman, then elected President last April 2003. I retired from teaching in July 2003 and then was appointed Executive Director of the DCA on Jan. 1, 2004.

I am very involved in community theatre as an actor and director. I play ice hockey regularly (don't go in the corners with me!) and continue to serve as the Provincial Advisor for the Nova Scotia Secondary School Students' Assn.

I believe strongly in serving as an advocate for youth with diabetes.
