Carbohydrates

By amy415 Thursday, August 09, 2007

Can someone tell me what your limit of intake on carbohydrates per day?  It was never really explained as far as the importance of keeping track of your carbohydrates intake being diabetic.

Thank you,

Amy

Dear Amy,

The limit depends on whom you ask. If varies from about 50% of of the calories that you eat down to as little as 30 grams of available carbs. What diet are you following?

Hi! David

I'm not an any diet at the moment.  I thought of trying Nutrisystem and had placed an order with them.  They over charged me and customer service didn't know how or rather didn't want to correct the billing problem so they cancelled my order.  I'm just trying to watch what I eat.  Staying away from breads for awhile as it kicks my sugar up.

Dear Amy,

I absolutely agree that it's a good idea to stay away from bread. The only bread I eat is rye crispbread. I like the Kalvi brand, particularly the light rye that has a lot of fiber. Rye is much lower glycemic than wheat flour, so it has little impact on our blood glucose levels.

Hi Amy,

Just recently diagnosed myself. Luckily it seems I'm in an area with good medical support and knowledge. My doctor sent me to a dietitian that specializes in Diabetes. The easiest way to get started is by breaking the carbs down to carb choices. Each choice is 15 grams of carbohydrates. A slice of bread is generally 1 choice. Skim Milk is 1 choice. Most fruits are 1 choice. Vegetables are free foods.  She told me to eat 4 carb choices for Breakfast, Dinner, and Supper ( old farm boy here, dinner is at noon and supper at 6 pm ) and 1 carb choice for a morning snack and 1 carb choice for an afternoon snack.
