I am now taking 5 Byetta and 2.5 Glyburide in the am and 5 Byetta in the pm.  My evening sugars drop to 48,72,86, i hour after taking Byetta in pm only.  Can I only take the am and skip the pm?  My sugars are running pretty well during the day after starting out at around 125.  But my pm are a mess with the lows and I can't keep eating to bring them up.  any suggestions?  Please?

Hi PeggyG57,

I used to think Byetta was a relatively new medication, but in actuality it's been around for about 10 years! It's just recently that it's been prescribed on a large scale.

David Mendosa is one of the resident experts here. He is well versed and has written much about Byetta. You can read the beginning of David's journey with Byetta here.

One of the instructions for Byetta usage is you must take it within 20 minutes or less PRIOR to eating. If you do not eat, or do not eat enough after taking the injection, then you will chance having very low glucose readings and that can be dangerous. The way Byetta acts is by slowing down the digestive process allowing the body to make sufficient insulin to deal with the carbs and calories you've eaten. If you don't eat enough, then the medicine makes the body work too well! :)

Also you might want to discuss with your doctor about your dosage. It sounds like 5ml per day would be plenty. So talk to your doctor about your dosage. It could be that your glucose levels are in check enough that you can cut back on either the Byetta or the Glyburide or perhaps both!

You can read more about Byetta here in the drug database. I would also suggest you read through all of David Mendosa's posts. You can read and search through them here.

Good luck with your diabetes management. Please stay in touch and let us know how you are doing!
