Responding to the Emotional Fallout Post-Oprah & Dr. Oz

By Amylia Grace, Health Guide Friday, February 05, 2010
Immediately following the airing of The Oprah Show episode on Diabetes: America's Silent Killer, I received a heart-wrenching email from a worried mom of a young son with type 1; reading her words and bearing witness to how sensationalized misinformation impacts not only those of us with all types of...

I can't tell you the number of times this stuff hits the caregivers, who are doing a great job and their kids will be in good health for the rest of their lives! Type 1 is so much more complicated then "eating sugar and carbs!"  Dr. Oz is about drama, as was the young harvard doctor who was on the show, and the irresponsibility from both of them not to use the moment to educate the public with appropriate facts was inexcusable!

We talk about healthcare reform in this country, but I'm not sure where to begin, with health insurance or doctors?  Over the course of 40 years with type 1, I've seen my share of doctors who were very misinformed!  Thus my enthusiastic "YES!" when I was asked if I would like to blog for healthcentral.com .  This group has been a wealth of well educated PWD(people with Diabetes), who share great information and strategy for living life to the fullest!   All of us on this site, whether an expert or community member knows more than what I watched yesterday from two apparent experts!

The stronger we are as a community of well informed patients, the more likely we will change our own healthcare providers!  NOW, if we can get Oprah on board!!!

YES, Ann. You are so right. The Diabetes online community has gifted me with so much more than any doctor or "expert" has. We are blessed to have access to such resources and myriad voices.

Beautiful response to the Mom of  T1.  I did not watch the Oprah show; I forgot to set my DVR.  I can tell by all of the blog post that it prob isn't something I wanted to see.  I don't believe in the Scare tatic.  Instead of showing people the bad things about Diabetes, I wish Oprah would've took the time to educate non-diabetics and diabetics about all types of diabetes and how to live a nice long life with it.  Who know's maybe I may watch it but I am not sure I will.
