My blood sugar levels have lately gone very high could this be due to the addition of pioglitazone?

By Trevor Wood Tuesday, June 12, 2007

I have been diagnosed Type 2 diabetic since March 2006 and have been prescribed Amaryl(6mg) and Glucophage prolonged release(2000mg) per day which generally brought my hb21c down to between 7.9 and 9.0.

This was deemed as still a little too high and 30mg of Pioglitazone was added to my daily intake.

Now, after 2 months on this combination, I am getting average daily readings on my meter of 20mmol/L instead of between 4 and 11 mmol/L I used to get. Could this be because of the Pioglitazone or is it, as my nurse thinks, more likely that I've have stopped responding to the drugs?

It’s not unusual for people with diabetes to need to make changes to their medication routines. Your health care practitioner may need to take some tests to determine your reaction to Pioglitazone (Actos) and make adjustments as needed. Have you reviewed the Diabetes Drug Information on these pages? You might want to look over the Actos, Amaryl, and Glucophage pages. You might also want to review David Mendosa’s article, Avandia and Actos Both Get Black Box Warnings, about the most recent FDA actions concerning these drugs.

I think you need to go on insulin.

Well, yes you were right. After consultation with the diabetic nurse at the hospital, I have been converted to insulin. I am just going through the stage of sorting out the insulin levels and feeling much better.

A good bit of analysis by you, thank you.
