Diabetes and Halloween: Myth vs. Fact

By Dr. Fran Cogen, Health Pro Tuesday, October 25, 2011
It's that time again: leaves turning orange and falling to the ground, a chill in the air, and scary props placed on lawns. Halloween is coming. We muddled through our first couple of halloweens after the type 1 diagnosis. These tips should help a lot of folks. We now do a hybrid: putting a small bag for Alex aside and buying the rest back. Little did we know that grandparents and even some friends would want to get in on the "buying" action...and they paid top dollar!  Alex often gets enough for a small lego set and still gets some candy. Now he often decides to eat less so he'll have more to sell.  Like you said, it's just one day a year, so why not make it fun for all!

Great post and thanks for demything it for everyone!  Children with diabetes can be "normal" and still eat what others eat, it just has to be planned in with the insulin treatment.  My two children with type 1 are on insulin pumps, so it's easier to just count the carbs in the candy and bolus more insulin.   They've never had out of control blood sugars from the candy as long as we compensate with insulin.  That's hard though for some people to understand, so thanks for explaining to everyone!
