Hi! It is with great pleasure that I will be joining the DiabeTeens website on HealthCentral.com as your Diabetes adviser. I am Dr. Fran Cogen, Director of the Childhood and Adolescent Diabetes Program at Children's National Medical Center. I have worked at Children's National for the past 13 years in the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes. I am a proud graduate of Cornell University and received my medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. I became a certified diabetes educator to empower our patients and families in mastering diabetes management.
Children's National's program cares for more than 1800 children and teens with all types of diabetes in the Washington DC metro area, which includes cities in Virginia, Maryland and DC. We even see some patients from West Virginia and Pennsylvania. We prescribe insulin pumps, basal/bolus therapy, and even use NPH and Regular/rapid acting analogs (humalog, novolog and apidra) depending on the needs of our patients. Our multidisciplinary team includes several nurses/certified diabetes educators, a dietician, social worker and psychologist. Please take this opportunity to ask any questions, even if you think they are not important! This will give everyone a chance to learn something new- including myself because I want to learn from you as well.
I look forward to hearing from you!
