Great post, Kerri. I've found myself on both ends of that myself and it is a fine line we must navigate. Sometimes, in those situations, I've pulled my own Minimed out and just hit a couple buttons in their line of sight to sort of invite any discussion they might want to initiate. I've also thrown out quick, non-invasive starters like, "Hey, nice (insert pump name or 'CGM' that only Ds would say so casually or correctly." That's led to some starts, and others that just didn't yield anything. But, I do like to talk and meet and am not shy, so I usually don't get all engaged unless they've initiated it or offered some sign that it's a welcome topic. Anyhow, you're right: NOT all we have to talk about!

I met my really good diabetic friend when we were both passing out diabetes flyers.  We had great conversation about our diabetes, our children, our jobs, books we were reading at that first meeting.  We've now been friends for about 20 years and we talk about more than diabetes.

If I am local and see someone who I guess is diabetic, I might strike up a little conversation with them and invite them to my type 1 support group.
