Does anyone have any weightloss tips for people with type 1 diabetes? I am currently using an insulin pump and my doctor increased my insulin dosage, I noticed some weight gain although my diet has not changed and would like some advice on how I can loose the few extra pounds???

Hi SJean,

Losing weight with Type 1 diabetes is do-able, but its really important to understand when more insulin and carbohydrates are helpful, how to eat to FUEL your metabolism (as opposed to just cutting calories) and what exercises are best geared towards weightloss!

I am a cognitive health coach, personal trainer and diabetes educator at www.Living-in-Progress.com. I'm also a competitive powerlifter, Type 1 diabetic and hold 15 records in powerlifter. Take a look, and if you'd like to schedule a FREE coaching experience session (no strings attached), then feel free to email me at Ginger@living-in-progress.com.

although not easy, loosing weight on a pump is possible but when is loosing weight easy in the first place. I am also on a pump and i have lost 30lbs so far this year it is a slow work in progress but what helps me most is drinking my water, watching what i eat and getting moving! some weeks are better than others..i also blog about it which helps me track things that are working and what isnt and be more accountable feel free to check it out if you want www.lifeoffthedlist.blogspot.com

Wow - good for you! A 30 lb loss is great. It sounds like you've hit a slight plateau but keep going! You made a lot of changes in your lifestyle at once a little while ago, saw great progress, and now your body isn't responding as drastically to that new lifestyle, so your weight loss will be bit a bit slower from here on out. That's okay, though! You want to be able to keep it off, so the more gradually it comes off, the easier it will be to keep it off and maintain your progress.

Hi Sjean,

There are mant reasons you could be gaining weight.  In your twenties your metabolism changes, it could be that your eating habits have come to a place where you can't burn off the foods that are your choices, or it could be related to your blood sugars!  You stated that you have recently increased your insulin, which tells me that you might have been having highs for a while.  It's possible that might be part of the reason for the weight gain.  Here's a blog that Ginger wrote on our sister site Diabeteens:

I'm also including Ginger's 10 lb weight loss that she chronicled for you to think about and read, this might shed some light on some of the issues for you:

It's hard for me to answer since I don't have too much information about you, but I thought this might be a good place to start. Certainly tighter control will offer you better management on all fronts, not just diabetes!

Feel free to ask more specific questions and I'll see if I can find some answers for you!
