I have known of my TypeII Diabetes since 1994 and have not been in control of it yet.
I have been under the care of four private doctors as well as the wonderful doctors at over five different VA facilities. I have had a quadruple bypass in 2003, have congestive heart failure, have had at least one minor stroke and two heart attacks (Unknown to me).
I have been on oral drugs, Regular Insulin, Lantos, and Byetta, individually as well as in different combinations thereof. I also have been on numerous other drugs related to both Diabetes and Heart concerns.
My A1c has been as high as 11.1 and as low as 6.9 (briefly). My blood sugar runs mostly in the 300's but for certain periods at a time will range in the 4-5oo's.
I have been on and off any or all my meds at different times because I just can't live with the side effects. The past 14 years have been unbareable; I'm 59 and I want my remaining years to be free of these problems.
When I take insulin, I gain weight. I have reached 300lbs 2-3 times in the past 14 years.
I don't like it. I go off insulin and lose 40-50 lbs over a month or so.
When I take insulin and/or other drugs, I get continuous Diahrrea so bad I have experienced accidents in public as well as in my sleep. No one can answer why.
When will I find someone who cares and knows what it takes to stop this madness?????

keno,
I am so sorry you are going through this.
Let me share what has worked for me. When I was diagnosed I was a not so perfect 10 A1c. I took metformin for 6 months while I got my diet & exercise program in place, and have been off of it since then. The last 3 have been 5.3 ( at 6 month intervals). I exercise daily ( started @ 5 minutes on the Gazelle edge I got at Wal Mart) & have worked up to 3.5 miles per night. I have done 4 5 K races ( walking) @ my best time is 45 minutes. I am on Atkins, and the low carb lifestyle has helped me keep my numbers in the 80's & 90's with the occasional 70 & not very often 100 ( well there WAS that champagne brunch * giggle*) . This has worked for me, and is helping me manage not only my health, but my life. Oh & I've lost 37 pounds ( 16 of which I had lost then regained when I quit smoking) and want to lose 40 more.
Keep looking, your answer is out there.
Good health,
Gracie
Thank you for your response, I appreciate your time to do so.
I have difficulty exercising do to neropathy (sp) in my legs and feet as well as my hands. It's even difficult to walk. I even get short of breath due to my CHF.
I follow Atkins but get tired of eating just meat and cheese. My Endo says I am Carbo intolerate. Eat 3-5 carbs and my BS goes over 200.
Thanks again for responding
KENO
Keno,
All diabetics are carb intolerant, that is part of it. I'm sorry you are having the physical issues as well, that must be really rough. Not to be critical, but why are you only eating meat & cheese? I have more veggies than I used to, and I was a big veggie eater before. I use cauliflower for most of the things I used to put potatoes in, mashed turnips are my new friends. I put mushrooms & peppers in my omelette, make a wicked cauliflower & cheese with ham, for homefries I now use jicama. Just a bit of thinking outside the same old, and you have a wide varied diet.
Hugs,
Gracie
As I mentioned, (with all due respect) I'm Carb intolerant, and I mean Carb intolerent. That is what is so frustrating as I love veggies.
Cauliflower has 5.3g per serving (raw); Broccoli has 5.84g (raw); Asparagus has 3.46g
Carrots 11.69g; Jicama 10.58g; etc.
Trust me and my expirimentation (with my Drs help), I can't eat more than 2-3 carbs without running my BS into the 200's
I wish I could eat as you say.
I appreciate the dialog, nice to know there is someone out there
Have a blessed day
Keno
Keno,
I'm so sorry. Yours is a very special case, and of course each of us is different. Hopefully you and your doctors can find a way of life for you that you can enjoy and be successful with.
Hgs,
Gracie
