I was diagnosed as insulin restistant in the mid 80's but didn't know just how serious that diagnosis was for me. I weighed 140 lbs at 5' 6 1/2" and thought that my weight was OK for my age. However, after menopause, my weight climbed to 170. I successfully lost weight on the Atkins plan and exercising, but stopped both when I retired in 2005. I began to be concerned after learning that both of my brothers and my sister were diabetic. (My older brother died last August from a heart attack.) My maternal grandmother and mother also had diabetes. I had given birth to a baby weighing over 9 pounds who has subsequently been diagnosed as a T2 diabetic.
I have followed David's newsletter for a number of years and have tried to follow what I thought was a healthy diet. Unfortunately, that diet included lots of carbs...2-3 servings of fruit, beans and legumes, whole grains and lowfat protein intake daily. After seeing references to Dr. Bernstein in David's newsletters, I recently purchased two of his books, as well as "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes. After following a low carb diet for the past month, I have seen the numbers on the scale hit 168.5 for the first time in years (I weighed 190 last summer!) After being hospitalized with bronchitis and being placed on a glucose drip, my BS soared to almost 300. The doctor placed me on the typical diabetes diet with lots of carbs. My A1c was 6.3 on August 24th but the doctor said that my blood sugar might not have stabilized yet. She advised me "to watch my sugars." Thanks to David, I am looking forward to seeing the results of my next blood tests.
